The honest answer to when you should book is as early as you can once the date is set. The less honest version is a number of months, and there are plenty of those written by people who are not making your gown.
What sits between the first conversation and the finished gown
Four things, and they run in sequence far more than they run alongside each other:
- design time, which is the conversation and the drawing that comes out of it
- fabric, which has to be chosen and then has to arrive
- hand embroidery, the slowest and least compressible part of any gown carrying it
- fittings, which cannot start until there is something to fit
That is why the calendar is not one number. A clean crepe column and a bodice carrying heavy hand work are two different calendars, and a design needing two fittings is a third.
Booking early buys choice, not only safety
The real cost of leaving it late is not risk. It is choice. Every week the date comes closer, another decision quietly stops being available: a fabric that would have needed ordering, a piece of hand work that takes the time it takes.
A close date does not usually change how a gown is made. It changes which gowns are still on the table.
Book early and the design is genuinely open. That is the difference the consultation is worth having early rather than once the shortlist has already narrowed itself.
If your date is already close
Ask before you assume anything. The consultation form asks for your wedding date for exactly this reason: the atelier can tell you what is workable for that date rather than leaving you to work it out from a general rule. If it is close enough that you are worried, message WhatsApp before booking and ask directly.
If you are not in Chennai
Fix the delivery date first, not the travel. A garment that has to reach another city needs room at the end of the calendar, and that is the part worth protecting. How the rest of it works is in commissioning a gown from another city.
