Notes from the atelier Commissioning a gown from another city

, updated Remote, Consultations, Fittings, Bridal gowns

The atelier is at Sterling Road in Nungambakkam, and it is going to stay there. Whether a bride has to be in Chennai is a separate question, and the answer is no.

Brides anywhere in India can book a video consultation instead of coming in. Measurements can be taken remotely. The finished pieces are delivered across India. A bride in Delhi, Kochi, Pune or Guwahati is a normal commission rather than a special case.

The design conversation does not change

A video consultation covers the same ground an in person one does. The same twelve decisions about silhouette, bodice, neckline, sleeves, skirt, in-skirt, veil, train, fabric, embroidery, your proportions and how the whole look is styled on the day, worked through the way a consultation in the room is. The same honest guidance about what will and will not sit well on you.

What is genuinely harder over video is fabric. A screen flattens weight and it lies about colour. Say so early if a hand feel matters to you, and it will be worked around rather than glossed over.

Measurement, and what a bespoke garment is measured against

The garment is cut to your measurements, not to a standard size chart. That is the whole point of a bespoke piece, and it is also why measuring is the one step that has to be got right.

How much checking a design needs depends on how structured it is. A clean crepe column and a boned bodice with a corseted back are not the same problem, and they do not need the same number of look-ins. Confirm the steps for your gown at the consultation, once the design is actually on the table.

A remote commission is not a smaller version of the same job. It is the same job with the checking moved onto a screen.

What we are not going to guess at

There are real questions here that this site does not answer yet, and inventing an answer would be worse than admitting the gap:

  • which video platform is used, and whether virtual consultations run in the same weekday and Saturday slots as in person ones
  • how measurements are taken at your end, and how many remote check-ins a commission usually involves
  • how alterations are handled if something does not sit right when it arrives
  • shipping timelines, delivery charges, and whether a shipment is tracked

Every one of those is answered per commission at the moment. Ask on WhatsApp and you will get the answer for your gown and your wedding date rather than an average.

Book the date, not the trip

If you are working with us from another city, the thing worth fixing first is the delivery date, not the travel. Tell us when the wedding is when you request a consultation, so the garment is scheduled to reach you with room to spare rather than in the last week.

How much room to leave is the subject of when to start, and what if your date is close.

Every commission starts with a conversation.

Bridal gowns

What decides the price of a bespoke gown

Fabric, hand embroidery, structure and the number of fittings all move the figure, so a commission is quoted to its own design rather than to a list.

Bridal gowns

When to start, and what if your date is close

Book as soon as the date is set. Design time, fabric, hand embroidery and fittings all sit between the first conversation and a finished gown.

Consultations

What a bridal consultation actually is

A Drapemoda consultation is a private design conversation, not a morning of trying gowns on. Here is what is decided in it, and what to bring.
